CHAPTER ELEVEN

ELENA

Elena paced the floor of her hotel room, distressed from the surprising visit from Court. She’d thought for sure he’d knock JJ to the ground or there would be some sort of a scuffle. It was sheer relief he’d left without doing more, but his touch had provoked all kinds of emotions and sensations she’d denied for so long.

“What am I going to do?” Elena asked, looking at JJ. He was sitting casually at the small table, clearly provoked by his almost-fight with Court.

“About what?” he blurted.

“Court! What do you think I’m talking about? He followed me here.” She didn’t even know why she was surprised by that. He was used to getting his way. She regretted she’d told him about the move, but she knew he would have found her anywhere. The world suddenly felt very, very small.

“I must admit, he’s got some balls thinking you’re still into him,” JJ said arrogantly. “Glad you threw the prick out,” he said bitterly.

“Goes to show how much you know. You said he’d lose interest,” she complained, and sank into the sofa, ruffling her loose hair. What she wasn’t saying aloud was how good it felt that a man like him had chased her over thousands of miles—a man like Court Saunders who could have any woman he wanted. It boosted her self-esteem. Even though she threw him out, she basked in the lingering after-effects of his attention and pursuit.

“You throw him out a couple more times, he’ll walk away. I fucking guarantee it. Men like that don’t handle rejection well. I bet it’s probably never happened to him before,” he said nonchalantly.

Elena wasn’t so sure about that. There was something in the way he told her she belonged to him. She didn’t feel like one of his possessions he checked on at odd intervals or kept in storage until needed. He wanted her for her company, and for her mind—for her entire being. She’d seen that from the very beginning.

“You don’t know him like I do,” Elena retorted in a dark voice. “He’s relentless. It’s like never accepting defeat is ingrained in his very DNA,” she said, tapping her head for emphasis.

“Just ignore him and focus on your career,” JJ advised. “He’s a passing phantom. Once he figures out you’ve moved on, he’ll move on, too. It won’t be long before you start seeing him in the tabloids again, mark my words.”

Elena frowned at her friend but didn’t argue. Once she’d discovered Court’s true identity, she’d done a few cursory searches online. Her favorite headline had read, Son of Billionaire Thrown Out Naked! She hadn’t read the article, but had closed the link in disgust. Court had an entire other life he’d kept hidden from her, sheltered behind the image of a devoted and serious businessman. How had she been so foolish to fall for him?

“Maybe you’re right,” Elena answered. She stared at the floor, trying in vain to get him off her mind.

It was an impossible task. His face was permanently etched in her memory, and their relationship wedged in her heart.
