CHAPTER ELEVEN
ELENA
Elena paced the floor of her hotel room, distressed from the surprising visit from Court. Sheâd thought for sure heâd knock JJ to the ground or there would be some sort of a scuffle. It was sheer relief heâd left without doing more, but his touch had provoked all kinds of emotions and sensations sheâd denied for so long.
âWhat am I going to do?â Elena asked, looking at JJ. He was sitting casually at the small table, clearly provoked by his almost-fight with Court.
âAbout what?â he blurted.
âCourt! What do you think Iâm talking about? He followed me here.â She didnât even know why she was surprised by that. He was used to getting his way. She regretted sheâd told him about the move, but she knew he would have found her anywhere. The world suddenly felt very, very small.
âI must admit, heâs got some balls thinking youâre still into him,â JJ said arrogantly. âGlad you threw the prick out,â he said bitterly.
âGoes to show how much you know. You said heâd lose interest,â she complained, and sank into the sofa, ruffling her loose hair. What she wasnât saying aloud was how good it felt that a man like him had chased her over thousands of milesâa man like Court Saunders who could have any woman he wanted. It boosted her self-esteem. Even though she threw him out, she basked in the lingering after-effects of his attention and pursuit.
âYou throw him out a couple more times, heâll walk away. I fucking guarantee it. Men like that donât handle rejection well. I bet itâs probably never happened to him before,â he said nonchalantly.
Elena wasnât so sure about that. There was something in the way he told her she belonged to him. She didnât feel like one of his possessions he checked on at odd intervals or kept in storage until needed. He wanted her for her company, and for her mindâfor her entire being. Sheâd seen that from the very beginning.
âYou donât know him like I do,â Elena retorted in a dark voice. âHeâs relentless. Itâs like never accepting defeat is ingrained in his very DNA,â she said, tapping her head for emphasis.
âJust ignore him and focus on your career,â JJ advised. âHeâs a passing phantom. Once he figures out youâve moved on, heâll move on, too. It wonât be long before you start seeing him in the tabloids again, mark my words.â
Elena frowned at her friend but didnât argue. Once sheâd discovered Courtâs true identity, sheâd done a few cursory searches online. Her favorite headline had read, Son of Billionaire Thrown Out Naked! She hadnât read the article, but had closed the link in disgust. Court had an entire other life heâd kept hidden from her, sheltered behind the image of a devoted and serious businessman. How had she been so foolish to fall for him?
âMaybe youâre right,â Elena answered. She stared at the floor, trying in vain to get him off her mind.
It was an impossible task. His face was permanently etched in her memory, and their relationship wedged in her heart.
